“We’ll Build A House (we’re good at that)”

July 16th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

In July 2011 the Sociable Science collective built the façade of a typical Irish ‘Ghost Estate’ house outside of the Werkatelier Gallery in Den Helder, whilst living in a caravan behind the construction. The façade and caravan will be left in place until the end of July and the gallery walls will be gradually filled with advertisements of houses currently for sale in Ireland.

The false facade of the body-less house appears to be a humourous comment on the myths of the Irish boom years and how the Celtic success was built on questionable foundations. However it becomes an eerie and forlorn structure; a ghost not just of Irish financial disasters, but of the epic losses across Europe. Countries such as Ireland, Greece and Iceland, previously the golden child of the economic west; now face suffocating austerity measures. If Ireland’s economic boom was a lie based on falsely inflated house prices and banking corruption, then the thousands of “ghost” houses lying empty reflect this false front and the calamitous fate of all countries slipping away from the economic “west”.

Babylon Kulturelles Ubersetzungsburo/ Berlin

Babylon Kulturelle Ubersetzungsburo is a performative installation which ran on the U8 line of the Berlin Underground between June 9th and 11th . 15 translators from across the word worked for the Babylon Kulturelle Ubersetzungsburo (Babylon Cultural Translation Agency) as agents, translating the announcements on the trains and stations into more than twenty different languages. There were Babylon Kulturelle Ubersetzungsburo stands at three stations, and a booklet was published and distributed, translating the german announcements of the underground.

This project was commissioned by the NGBK in association with the BVG as part of their “U-!0 – von hier aus ins Imaginare und weider zuruck” programme.

New Work

May 3rd, 2011 § Leave a Comment

The next few months will be super busy with the following:

Sociable Science will be bringing our “Just Keep Shopping (everything will be okay)” project to Berlin for the “Beyond Growth?!” Congress at the Technical University from May 20th – 22nd 2011 Check out http://www.jenseits-des-wachstums.de and www.sociablescience.wordpress.com

We will also have an exhibition in Richter Art Centre in Den Helder in Holland for the months of July and August. This is new work for us which will reflect directly on the irish domestic housing crash from a Dutch perspective.

I will be launching a solo (but fairly collaborative) project in the start of June in Berlin. This is a participatory installation with a major sound element and will take place on the U8 underground line over three days. It is part of the U10 – From Here To The Imaginary And Back Again series commissioned by NGBK in Berlin.

I will be showing a video piece in both Cork and Kerry Cycling Festivals over the summer, which I am really excited about! It has been a long time since I have shown video work in public.

For the new year I started a video sketch-blog. So far I’ve uploaded eleven rough-edit videos filmed casually on a small cheap digital camera. I’ll continue till the end of the year or until someone reprimands me for filming kids on the luas or some such nonsense.

Still plugging away at my new aggregating blog which gathers together links to sites related to social/political/engaged art and writing. Have a feeling I will be working on it for years as I’m still only half way down my links list!
